Frequently asked questions
Which cave in Peru is easiest to visit?
The Cueva de las Lechuzas near Tingo María has a walkway and is inside a national park. Qenqo near Cusco is also easy and open all year.
When is the best time to go?
The dry season from about May to October. Roads and paths are in better condition and river caves are safer.
Do I need a guide?
Yes at Quiocta, Palestina and Huagapo, where there is no lighting. Guides are arranged locally.
Is altitude a problem?
It can be. Huagapo is at about 3,500 metres and Lauricocha at about 4,000 metres. Spend a few days acclimatising first.
Where can I see oilbirds?
At the Cueva de las Lechuzas in Tingo María National Park and at the Cueva de Palestina. See The oilbird.
Can I go close to the sarcophagi at Karajía?
No. They are on a cliff ledge and are seen from a viewpoint below. Bring binoculars.
Are the caves suitable for children?
The Cueva de las Lechuzas, Qenqo and the walk to Revash suit children. Quiocta is muddy and Lauricocha is remote and high.
Are there health risks?
Dust in caves with oilbirds or bats can carry a fungus that causes histoplasmosis. Stay on walkways and avoid stirring up dust. See Caving safely.
Is this website connected with DeepSeek, the AI company?
No. Deep Seek Peru is an independent guide. It has no connection with any artificial intelligence company or product, or with any site operator or tourist board.
